The Growing Desire to Self-Host

As Wordpress grows and as my comfort with Hugo increases I question whether to move my blog from Infomaniak to being self-hosted on a Pi. I know that the Pi is not powerful but my site doesn’t get much traffic so I don’t think that it will be overwhelmed with traffic. I have slightly less than three weeks to decide whether to make the leap or not. The Hugo part of my blog is easy to migrate because it’s a static site.

Car Apps That Don't Work

I am fatigued by cars and their apps. When I was using the Citroën car twice a week it was working fine but then I let it sit for a month and then it stopped synching correctly. I have done several trips now, and the journeys are either not recorded properly or the date is a month out of sync with the journey. I tried to pair a Fiat500e with a phone or two via two or three aps and here too I failed.

The Morning Afternoon Run

Yesterday or recently I had a discussion about running. The discussion was about whether I have a favourite time of day to run and whether I can eat before a run and still run. The answer is that I’m flexible in the time at which I run. I can run as easily first think in the morning at 5am as right before lunch, as after lunch. it really doesn’t matter.

A Bluesky Flame and the Case for Anonymity

In the golden age of social media I went from tweeting with a pseudonym to tweeting with my own name. This was as true on Twitter as on Facebook. There was a sense of community that meant that we were safe to use our own names, rather than nicknames. That age ended in 2020 when normal people, isolated by lockdowns, became familiar with Twitter and other social networks. In 2020 I was flamed more than once on Twitter, and eventually became private, after using a pseudonym.

The Bluesky Flame

I had and have reservations about Bluesky. I worry about the venture capitalists funding the site and I worry about the community on the site. Today I wrote a post that was meant to show empathy but it got me flamed. The flames were just two posts, but that flame is enough for me to deactivate my account, at least until the flamers have given up. I was flamed like that on Twitter in 2020 or so, and on the Fediverse more than once, which is why I almost gave up on the Fediverse.

Immich and an M.2 NVMe Drive on a Pi

Immich is an easy to install and use app that works well with the Pi5. By default you will have it run on the SD card but yesterday I finally found an NVMe drive at a reasonable price so I swapped the AI kit for a 521 NVMe drive. It was detected with ease so I formatted the hard drive. I then used GRsync to move the photos from the SD card to the NVMe drive.

To Drive or to Fly

In a week or less I will go on a long drive from Switzerland to Spain, stopping at least once, to refuel. I love the drive. I love that it gives me time to think, and to listen to audio books for hours in a row, rather than for a few minutes while cooking or an hour or two while cooking. This time I considered flying but the issue with flying is that I lose a lot of freedom, and the cost, in terms of time is half a day, instead of an entire day.

Step Tracking with the Casio ABL-100WE

The Casio ABL-100WE range of watches look similar to the A-168 range of Casio watches with one key difference. It counts steps like several G-shock watches do but rather than have a massive case that can survive a ten meter drop onto concrete it looks “elegant”, like the a-158, a-168 and other casio models. This is a water resistant watch, so you shouldn’t go scuba diving with it. It has a battery life of about two years, depending on how you use it.

Twitter Account Deactivated

Yesterday I finally took the step of deactivating my account, and then reactivating it, and then this morning deactivating it again. Normally when I lose interest in a social network I just forget about it and I’m done. In this situation I didn’t forget about it though. I went a step further. Three factors pushed me towards this decision. The first is that Musk wants to use our tweets to feed AI and I don’t want my tweets to be used that way.

How Old Fashioned A Petrol Engine Seems

Every single time I go from driving an EV to driving a petrol car I am struck by old fashioned and smelly old cars are compared to new ones. In this context an old car is any car that has a petrol engine rather than an electric motor. I had to play musical cars just now, and put the winter tires into the petrol car, to get them swapped so that I can drive in winter safely.
