Rain

Of Rain, Parties and Cycling

Last night I was tempted by the idea of going for a bike ride this morning but chose not to because I wanted to save my energy to ride with a group tomorrow. Now, as I watch some induhviduals (intentional spelling) prepare things for an all night party I’m thinking “oh duck, I made the wrong decision”. If I had gone for the group ride today, I could have fled the noise pollution that will take place this evening, and this evening.

Autumn Rain and Cancelled Bike Rides

Last night I could have gone for a group ride, and it wouldn’t have rained on, despite what the weather said. As I went for a ride that morning, and felt tired, it felt rational not to ride in the evening.

Last night it rained consistently until this morning but now the sun is almost out again and the sky is brighter. In theory this means that cycling would be an option.

Waiting for Cyclone Erin and Rain

On RTS Info they warn about Erin, the ex-cyclone probably hitting Switzerland, dumping a lot of rain. The alert for some areas is level 5.

This is for a narrow band in the Alps on the Italo-Swiss border. The possible impacts are ’extreme rise in water of rivers and lakes, flooding in many areas, and landslides. Rail and road traffic could be impacted.

Around Nyon there is a chance of localised flooding, dry ditches filling with water, and in some places localised flooding in basements and other places.

The Energetic Cycling Rest Day

On Sunday evening I saw that a ride was planned for Monday evening. Usually I would hae skipped this ride because I felt that I should rest. According to Garmin I should have taken a rest day.

I intended to have a calm bike ride, until I got onto the bike and started to pedal. I went through the road I find is dangerous, before taking a second road I find is dangerous, before taking a third road I find dangerous, before finally being on safe roads.

When Weather and Contours Make Us Lazy

When I decided to flee the noise pollution of Paléo to stay somewhere different for a few days I was filled wiith cycling projects, but because of the weather forecast I mothballed them. They announced that it could rain all day, every day, for almost the entire week.

Weather

They announce that it will rain ’tomorrow’ except that tomorrow is either sunny or overcast but the rain fails to materialise. Today it did show up as a serious downpour for a few minutes and then it stopped. I would have been soaked, but with clothes that dry quickly it would be uncomfortable for a short time.

Rain and Serendipity

It often rains for the entire rain of Caribana and this makes me happy. It makes me happy because when I complained to them about their noise pollution two or three years ago they gave me a boiler plate answer instead of doing something about it.

I am currently staying away from my home until Sunday morning because I know that to stay home would drive me nuts. From what I see the Caribana is an event with just 6000 patrons or so, and yet they play the music so loud that it is impossible for me to do anything without hearing it from 18:00 - 03:00 from Wednesday night to Sunday morning.

The Daily Workout

Every single day I walk, run, or cycle. It doesn’t matter whether it’s rainy, sunny, windy, snowy or other. I do this out of habit. I know of quite a few routes that I can walk, run or cycle so there are variants. Some are long, some are short. If it’s going to rain I may choose a shorter route.

Leysins Group Hike

Today I could have driven to Leysin to do a group hike. It was full, but if I know the date and time it’s easy to join despite being in the waiting list. I didn’t feel like driving for an hour and a half to walk for a few hours, with a group of ‘strangers’ this weekend. I do group activities but my solitude never changes, so whether I walk alone locally, without using the car or not, doesn’t change much.

The Sound of Heavy Rain

Yesterday I walked with a light rain coat because it rained a few times during the day. This morning it has been raining heavily for hours. I stepped outside to get 4 season tyres from the post box for the bike and my back was quite wet after a few minutes.

Such rain might feel limiting if it fell several times a week, but it doesn’t. It usually falls heavily for a few hours, and then it stops for a few days, before coming back. If I want to go outdoors, I will need to wait until this afternoon today. It’s meant to stop at 1500 or so. That’s when I can go for a run.

The Post Cold Run

Some people will see that it’s running, and that they are still recovering and think “I’m not running in that. I did and my “short run” project was changed to a full run. I had planned to run two to three kilometres but ran five instead. The Apple watch wasn’t happy, not with the running, but with the rain. It got a false tap and paused itself for 300 or more meters.

Thoughts on a Rainy Day

Today it’s raining, which may imply that I will not go out for a walk, or a run, and definitely not a bike ride. It also implies that I am wearing the Apple watch for no reason today. My step count will be low, as will my calories burned count, and finally my exercise minutes. On a day like today I could keep it off, for peace of mind. I really wish Apple Fitness behaved like Strava, rather than a silo.
