The Daily Workout

Page content

Every single day I walk, run, or cycle. It doesn’t matter whether it’s rainy, sunny, windy, snowy or other. I do this out of habit. I know of quite a few routes that I can walk, run or cycle so there are variants. Some are long, some are short. If it’s going to rain I may choose a shorter route.

Leysins Group Hike

Today I could have driven to Leysin to do a group hike. It was full, but if I know the date and time it’s easy to join despite being in the waiting list. I didn’t feel like driving for an hour and a half to walk for a few hours, with a group of ‘strangers’ this weekend. I do group activities but my solitude never changes, so whether I walk alone locally, without using the car or not, doesn’t change much.

Weather also plays a role. When the weather is bad during the week, I’m less likely to want to take buses and trains to do something. I’m more likely to stay local. I like to do things that require no cars, no trains, and no buses. I like things that have little to no carbon footprint.

Nyon Group Ride

I would have been tempted by a group ride from Nyon yesterday. I like the idea of cycling from nearby, and meeting local people rather than people from Lausanne and Geneva. In my experience my solitude doesn’t change by meeting people from Geneva and Nyon, but it might by meeting local people. The last time I joined a group ride it tired me out, so I want to be fresh.

As I write this the sun is out but it’s still foggy/cloudy so I could have travelled for two and a half hours today, and not had much of a view anyway. It’s nicer to go up to such viewpoints when the visibility is good.

And Finally

Seasonality plays a role. We are between summer and winter so psychologically it feels as if the Summer hiking season is over, especially when it’s raining. If the weather had been good I would have been motivated to do more, this weekend.
