Cold current
The current comes from the poles and is cold so it creates mist and does not carry or evaporate water so the area a few kilometres from the sea is dry.
Rain shadow
Two things can create the rain shadow: Mountains and continental location.
Deserts such as the Gobi desert are created as it is so far away from the sea that the water can’t make it that far and so it falls before arriving to the desert.
It is said that 95% of a river’s energy is needed to overcome friction. In a time of flood, the river discharge will increase and there will be an energy surplus. The material known as load is then picked up and carried by the river.

This occurs when boulders and rocks are knocked against each other and gradually reduce this stage.
This drainage basin is the largest drainage basin in Australia. It takes up to 1/7th of the continent. It rises in the great dwindling range and flows south westwards. It’s headwater are found in Mt. Koseiusko, the largest mountain in Australia. The river is vital for agriculture since the interior of the country is very arid.
The rivers are used for 1) power 2) agriculture and 3) House hold use. 2,000,000 people live in the catchment area and the region is known as the “food bowl” of Australia producing some 30 % of the country’s total food production.

Moraine
Moraine is a term used to describe the material which has been carried and deposited at the end of it’s route. There are three variatons of moraine to remember.The first one is** terminal** moraine. These occur where the glacier has ceased progressing forwards and deposited it’s load at the furthest point from it’s starting position.Recessional morain occur where the glacier has retreated and slowed it’s retreat to deposit more rock and material.Medial moraine can be found where two glaciers have converged into one valley and between them deposited their load.
Fold mountains are caused by the pressure of two plates compressing upwards and downwards to create mountain ranges such as the Himalayas. There are also layers of folded sediments like the Jura or rock such at the Alps. The part which goes down is called a geosyncline while sediments as they are lighter go upwards to form the mountains.

Features trade winds produce
These mainly occur in the trade wind belt on the western side of continents where the winds are offshore. On shore local winds do blow across these coasts but they rarely, if ever, bring rain because they have to cross cool currents which parallel the coasts in these latitudes. The cool currents cause condensation to take place in the on shore wind which produces mist, fog or light rains. By the time they reach the coasts the winds are dry. E.g.: Sahara desert Africa
In Geography during the first year we studied PUDA, this is how I refer to Population, Urbanisation Development and Agriculture. As to this year we are studying physical geography.
I enjoy Geography because I have seen many of the features we talk about in geography and because it is almost present in some form on the news this is one of the easiest topics I know where you can develop a good knowledge without to much work.

Studying in an international school and working in international organisations have broadened my worldview.Making friends for short periods before they move onto another country. This has affected the way I consume the media, following BBC world, following world news and current affairs to understand today’s world. During a recent lecture and seminar we explored the idea of information societies, what does it constitute and do we live in one. I enjoy this question and in particular I would like to take a quick glance at what the UNDP and ILO are aiming for. Decent work of Children. When younger children are forced to workj then they are not given access to the means of production for an information society. When studying and going to an international school one of the tasks a few of us had been set as a condition for going to Tanzania was fund raising. Over a period of a few weeks we organised methods by which to fund projects in education. These tasks ranged from putting a proper ceiling in some houses, building classrooms in other words or giving them english lessons.
Script writing is often overlooked by people, thinking that it’s a waste of time, that it’s boring because it’s theoretical. I really enjoy the process though. It requires you to think of a story and how to re-create on paper so that other people understand your vision.I learned of the importance of having a script and storyboard during a shoot we did over a period of four weeks, before the script writing.
