I have a 2016 MacBook Pro that now requires me to swap the battery. The issue is that because this is a machine from 2016 it is seen as obsolete by Apple. This means that Xcode and other apps no longer get updated. Neither does Final Cut Pro X and other apps.
In light of this if I was to swap the battery for a new one it could cost about 250 CHF.
Two or three days ago I noticed that I have spent at least sixteen thousand three hundred and fifty seven minutes listening to 320 items over 214 days via Audiobookshelf and I can honestly say that of my self hosted experiments this is my favourite.
What I Like What I like about Audiobookshelf is that it gives me the opportunity to find podcasts I like, add them, download every episode and then slowly make my way through them.
For a few days I ran ClassicPress rather than WordPress and it ran fine. I noticed that sliding between WordPress and ClassicPress is not as simple as it used to be. Now we need to find the build URL and I couldn’t find documentation about what the Build URL is.
Having said this I was reminded of why I have been with WordPress for 20 years. The answer is “When I break something I can fix it within seconds, or minutes, with little effort or concern.
I almost always go for walks that are a loop because I don’t like to go back and forth. I prefer to have new sights for the entire walk. Today I thought about how I could go for a walk but rather than come back by a variant of that route I could come back with a bike.
If I use my own bike I would need to drop it off where I want to use it from but if I plan my walk from one Publibike point to another then I could ride home, or vice versa.
Yesterday I thought that I would get breakfast for free before the ride but I didn’t. As a result of this I went for a bike ride in a fasted state. I considered having pasta for dinner the night before, even as breakfast but didn’t.
The result is that the energy stores I burned off on the two previous rides were not replenished and I started with an energy deficit. The result of this is that I was looking for a place to stop long enough to take a few energy gels I had with me, to fuel at least partially.
For two days I rode twenty five kilometres, which, by my standards, are quite small rides. Today I rode with a group and for a while I was fine but then, when I climbed from Nyon towards Duillier I began to feel that I was fatigued. I slowed down and I couldn’t keep up with the group, or more accurately, the group had better acceleration and once you’re dropped you have to make more effort.
In the US people are obsessed with the lure of self-driving cars and robotaxies but I think these are looking in the wrong direction. If you’re looking in the right direction you improve bus services. You improve their frequency and you improve their coverage. You also improve the bike sharing infrastructure.
If you live in a village that is a half hour walk from the local train station then it is key that you add more buses, at more times.
Two nights ago I saw that Netflix was recommending that I watch The Platform 2, so I watched The Platform instead. The Platform is a Spanish film that takes place in a pit/prison. Within this prison every cell is stacked vertically and those on the first floor get first dibs on food. Those at the bottom fall victim to the greed of those on the top level. If you have not watched the film yet, stop reading now as I will include spoilers
Threads, for the very beginning was an awful idea. Facebook already has Facebook, Instant Messenger, Whatsapp, Instagram and more. It was greedy so it created Threads but Threads has one fatal flaw. It’s a web chat driven by algorithms rather than chronological conversations.
The reason for which this matters is that it pushes content that has been seen and interacted by thousands of people, rather than half a dozen. We’re seeing posts that had a thousand comments and five thousand comments.
Yesterday I walked with a light rain coat because it rained a few times during the day. This morning it has been raining heavily for hours. I stepped outside to get 4 season tyres from the post box for the bike and my back was quite wet after a few minutes.
Such rain might feel limiting if it fell several times a week, but it doesn’t. It usually falls heavily for a few hours, and then it stops for a few days, before coming back.
