A Fairphone 4 With A Terabyte of Storage
If you wanted an iPhone with a terabyte of storage it would cost you 1549 CHF for the iPhone 16 Pro. With the Fairphone 4 128 GB model you would pay 329 CHF for the phone and 101 to 109 CHF for a 1TB card. That’s about 440 CHF and you’d have an absurd amount of storage. Absurd because you never want to lose a device with that much data on an SD card.
Having said this I have Google One Drive with two terabytes of storage for off-site backups as well as Photoprism and Immich for ’local’ backups. Any photos and videos I take with the phone are backed up.
Usually I buy a phone with 128 GB of memory because it’s the cheapest viable iphone and because iCloud is only affordable up to 200GB. After that it becomes 120 CHF per year, and I am not ready to pay so much for a cloud service that makes it hard to retrieve data once it is uploaded to their cloud. It’s when I had an 8+ as a primary phone that I realised this limitation.
Plenty of computers and laptops and computers do not have one terabyte of storage so this is excessive. This was an experiment. It worked, and now, I could switch back to a more reasonably sized SD card. Even 128 GB has been enough for me for years.
And Finally
The simple act of adding an SD card reader makes it simple to upgrade a phone within seconds, at a fraction of the cost. When I chose between both Fairphone 4 versions I considered whether 6gb of ram or 8gb of Ram was better. In the end I settled for the cheaper option but upgrading was simple.
With an iPhone I know that within a few weeks or months I will need to carry an external battery. With the fairphone I can swap the battery when it starts to last for a shorter amount of time.
