From La Sarraz to Romainmotier and Back

Page content

It is possible to walk from La Sarraz to Romainmotier and back with barely any time spent on roads. You can get there by train b taking a train to Renens, and then switching to a train from Renens to La Sarraz. You can also drive to La Sarraz via the motorway and park at the P&R parking for five francs per day, via the app. It costs 1 CHF per hour but the walk took five and a half hours so I amortised the parking by staying more than five hours.

The walk is quite easy. For the most part you are on dirt roads and trails. There are one or two bits where the path is a little steeper and requires people to be fit enough to negotiate the larger “steps” but other than that it is a reasonable walk. The distance we covered was about 17km. It has about 670m of climbing and descending.

You walk from La Sarraz through the town for a bit, following the signs to Romainmotier. You then walk by a camping, and then a hospital, and then along the river for a bit. You cross a bridge two or three times and eventually you get to the waterfall Du Dard. It is a nice waterfall, especially when it is erupting with water, as it has been, after so much rain for several months now.

The next part is along a river that has been contained. It goes by a water wheel, two fountains where clothes can be washed, and plaes where you can get honey and other things.

Eventually you get to Romainmotier where you can stop for coffee, and cakes, before visiting the abbey. The walk back is along another nice path.

And Finally

What strikes me about these walks is that the natural instinct would be to believe that you would have a road walk but that isn’t the case. Despite it being quite close to civilisation the paths are nice and wild. The paths were a little muddy in paths but we had the good luck of walking under the tree canopy when it was raining so we stayed dry. There were a few muddy paths and occasionaly people passed on bikes. For the most part this is a nice nature walk. With two cars you could do it as a one way walk. The advantage of this walk is that it is a loop so you can go by train, or by car.
