On the Importance of Media Literacy in the Smartphone Era

Within the last two weeks children have headed back to schools. As a consequence of this schools, towns, villages, and ‘states’ are banning mobile phones for children and teenagers. In theory this is a fantastic, and simple solution. In practice this is failing society. Plenty of adults, from my generation, and younger, are media illiterate. They use computers for work, and used them for uni and for school, but they didn’t use them for pleasure.

A few months ago I was thinking of getting a new iPhone SE and then I read that it would go up in price by at least 50 USD and that it would have an Apple modem and more and I lost interest in upgrading. For me the niche served by a budget phone is that it is affordable. By affordable I mean below 500 CHF to buy new, when it’s current.

You may look at a feature phone, or dumb phone, depending on your sense of humour as a fantastic trip back into the past where phones are used for calling people and texting. Whilst this reality may seem enthralling the reality is quite different. A feature phone is old fashioned today. If you use a feature phone you may lose your access to both of these instant messaging platforms.

Initial Thoughts on the Crosscall Core-S4

Not for FB or Twitter Today I started to play with the Crosscall Core-S4 and my impressions of it so far is that the Facebook and Twitter apps are not optimal for this device. They do not consider that with a small screen you should prioritise text over images. For those reasons I think that FB and Twitter are a reason to avoid this phone. This might actually encourage you to buy this phone.
