The Cold Morning Ride
This morning I toyed with the idea of wearing a proper winter cycling top. Instead I settled for a thermal layer, the usual top, sleeves, and a wind blocker. These weren’t enough for me to feel warm.
10°c
The temperature has dropped. it was 10°c this morning and I was cold when I set off and I seriously considered turning back for another layer but thought that if I did, then when it gets really cold, I won’t have anything warmer to wear on bike rides. I should have worn that top. It didn’t warm up.
This is the time of year when it makes sense not to get up early for a ride. This is the time when waiting for the area to warm up makes sense. If you are patient enough, when the sun rises, you have the warmth, and benefits of the sun. Ride too early and you get the sunrise and fog over bodies of water like the Lac De Divonne.
Too Cold for Photos
Someone, today, said, “I didn’t want to take photos today because I was afraid of dropping my phone.” Gloves would have been welcome today.
All Season Tyres
Recently I have been playing with the idea of changing to some four season tyres after having a skid or two, when the rear wheel skided. Today the tyres were fine but I wasn’t riding as tightly within the group as sometimes so I had more time to react. The roads were dry, despite the cool temperature.
And Finally
At this time of year it makes sense to dress warmly. The air temperature doesn’t shoot up as soon as the sun comes out so it makes sense to be dressed warmly enough to be comfortable. Several people got cold today, heating their hands on café renversé and other types of coffees. I think that after this experience people will be ready to dress for cold weather, at least for morning rides. It will get to 20°c shortly.
