The Weekend Without Social Cycling Plans

Page content

For the first time in weeks I have no social plans this weekend due to two factors. The first is weather. It’s meant to rain both days so I’d rather not plan to do something that needs to be cancelled due to bad weather. The second reason is due to the selfish habits of nocturnal people.

If I woke up at 6am and I clattered in my cleats for four or five hours people would be furious. If however, a music festival makes noise from 1800 to 3am from Tuesday to Sunday, that’s fine according to normal people. That’s the paradox of this day and age. If outdoor sporty people make noise, or block people from doing what they want for a few hours, this is a scandal.

Noise Pollution and Overcrowding

It’s because I fled from the noise pollution of a music festival that it would take even longer to cycle from Morges tom to Geneva for a group ride. If I take the train then I could be on very busy trains with a bike.

If I cycle then I would be on busy roads with festival goers. Years ago I was hit by a festival goer while driving the scooter. I am almost certain that she was staring at her phone. She didn’t see that I had stopped to let a runner cross at a pedestrian crossing. She destroyed the back of my scooter. I was fine. I’m not riding around a music festival when that could happen again, with less protection.

Rain and Storms

Last week I thought that this week I would be taking advantage of spending the week in a different location to cycle along new routes. It’s because the forecast has been so bad for the last week that I have done so little. When rain is forecast for the entire week it makes sense not to make plans.

As I wrote this post there was a sudden downpour that would have drenched me if I had been in the wrong place at the wrong time. If I had been at the right place during the downpour I could have looked through the collection of books at a lending library.

Nine and Ten Millimeters of Rain

I checked. 9-10 millimeters of rain are expected for tomorrow, and the same is expected for Sunday. This weekend is going to be wet. The estimate ranges from 2mm which isn’t a worry, to 22mm which is. Tomorrow morning should be okay. On Sunday rain could come during the entire day. With a forecast like this it is hard to make solid plans.

And Finally I’m Peaking

For the first time I see that Garmin has said that I am peaking and that I am in ideal race condiition. This means that although I am procrastinating/resting I am also benefiiting from not pushing like I usually do. Usually I end my days at 10-40 percent and recently I have ended at 70 percent.

If I am able to sleep properly this evening I will be able to go for a bike ride tomorrow morning before the rain, and I will keep a rain proof bag in case the weather does catch me out. Tomorrow morning should provide the best opportunity for this weekend.
