Over a year ago I started using twitter and it had great promise. The public timeline was so slow that I would refresh it and there would be no new comment for minutes at a time. The service would auto refresh from the website and the community was small. The @ feature didn’t exist and no one I knew was using it. Over a period of weeks and months more and more people started to use it and following was all web based without any api. Eventually people would begin using the @ symbol to direct comments to specific people and with the increase in traffic so the auto refresh broke, and was later removed. Later still Api support was finally offered. We would get thousands of SMS a month and the term twitter bukake was coined. It was used to describe the act of suddenly getting twenty to a hundred SMS at a time as you emerged from the tube. After a while in Europe this was limited to 250 tweets a week. Then it died. No more tweets would get to our phones and twitter would no longer have the appeal that it had at first. It went from being one of the most interesting and innovative and interesting ways to communicate between people in various countries to something that everyone would imitate and equal. That’s why I’m so disappointed that there are no SMS, that’s why I think that the twitter managment have really missed a great opportunity. I’m glossing over the months of failwhales and server crashes. I miss the old twitter.

I really enjoy using the EEE PC but there is one tiny flaw, the keyboard is to small to do any real typing. That’s why when I got home I plugged in a spare keyboard and mouse from a desktop and started to type. It works really well. No problems detecting the keyboard or anything. Since we’ve all got a spare keyboard and mouse lying around why not take advantage of that when we want to do some real work on the EEE PC. By the way I can touch type on the EEE so this is a question of comfort and playfulness.

If everything goes according to plan tweetsms will be the first to offer the world the opportunity to receive sms from twitter to their phones. They released the prices today and by Friday we should be able to use the service once the bugs are worked out. Looking forward to that moment

It’s coming to more and more phones over time. Now you can get it on quite a few phones, from Nokia to Blackberry to Sony Ericsson and iphone (to a lesser degree)

Live video streaming from the mobile phone is normal for me. Yesterday for example I was streaming from the boat as the Croisière de l’espoir came back into port.

As Yael Naim’s live performance of Toxic plays from my phone so I’m playing with Blueapple.mobi which “brings internet video and pictures directly to mobile users”. It’s an interesting service that allows you to view videos from a number of sources. You can see some of the recommended videos which are already converted from sources such as CBS or you can search for others. When you find a video that is not converted yet the site will convert the video on the fly and within a very short amount of time you will be able to download it straight to the phone. This is more interesting than other services where you need to download applications in order for the files to be available. Of particular interest is the feature that you don’t need anything extra on the phone. Just download the video, watch it and then discard it. No waste, no clutter. Take a look, it could be of interest as mobile broadband prices go down and free wifi become ubiquitous.

Over the years I’ve jumped from one phone to another and each time I’ve had a backup of all my contacts on at least three other devices at all time. The latest service I’ve played with is Zyb. Whilst still in Beta it’s a simple to use interface for s60 phones like the N95 that allows you to synchronise all your contacts with one simple action. Among the features I like are the ability to see which of your other contacts are using the service as well as the easy merging of duplicate entries. That’s particularly interesting when, like me, you’ve had to synchronize across a number of platforms over the years and ended up with a few duplicates. It’s also online which means your contacts are always accessible as long as you’re online should you lose your phone or the batteries die. In so far as I can tell there is no automatic syncing so the updates are as frequent as you remember to do them unlike with paying services like missingsync where updates are as regular as you are close to the machine you synchronise with.

This morning, August 15 2008, Blog Action Day has launched. In the next two months we hope to encourage thousands of bloggers, podcasters and videocasters to learn about poverty, and on October 15, take action.
