Hurricane Mitch

Hurricane Mitch

An introduction

During the early days of Novembre 1998 Hurricane Mitch hit Honduras causing devastation and desolation for thousands of people living in countries such as Nicaragua, Honduras etc. One country Nicaragua, was particularly devastated with 70% of its crop devastated as well as many roads, homes and even villages being laid waste.

Reasons for the devastation

With winds of 100+ kilometers an hour in a zone such as Nicaragua it is extremely dramatic due to the fact that the country is poor. They don't have much wealth so they build homes out of whatever they can find such as wood, stone etc. giving a weak structure easily broken down by the wind.

Another factor is the de-forestation taking place in these countries because they hope to pull themselves up the scale to the same level as the developing countries, unfortunately progress comes at a price, this price being accelerated erosion on the mountain slopes.
